thè CHIOS booklet
Chios, the mystical island of mastic, the birthplace of Homer and the home of a few very rich shipowners. Chios is a versatile island with something for everyone.
Chios Town is the capital of the island, a bustling place with an attractive harbour on the east coast within sight of Turkey. The island consists of three regions. Each region has its own history and culture, even the landscape is quite different in each part. The kambos is a fertile, flat region to the south of Chios Town with country houses from the Genoese period set in vast citrus groves. Notiochora is in the south, also known as Mastichora, the region where the famous mastic comes from. Voriochora, the north of the island, is rugged and mountainous with small villages, some of them deserted. The inhabitants of this region make their living mainly by farming and fishing. Chios has several monasteries worth visiting. The best-known of these are the Nea Moni, with its famous mosaics dating from 1042 and Agia Markella, the monastery of the patron saint of the island. The history of Chios goes back to prehistoric times. There are not many remains from antiquity, but some of the villages are still just as they were in the Middle Ages. The tourist trade has made progress in recent years without becoming a nuisance. The resorts are situated mainly on the east coast, in and around Chios Town, Karfas and Vrontados. There are hotels and apartments in A to E-classes and various places to go including restaurants, bars, discos and nightclubs. One of the few sandy beaches on the island is at Karfas where there are some facilities for water sports such as windsurfing and pedalo boating.Chios is ideal for holidaymakers who like to combine cultural heritage with nature and adventure, while they also enjoy the peace and quiet, the original Greek atmosphere and the hospitality of these friendly people.
thé CHIOS booklet will certainly help to make your trip a memorable experience!
